Cartilage- 1966 to 2016
At their
50th High School reunion, no one did a survey of ailments.
In fact
they’d agreed not to talk about bodily decline,
but soon
discovered they were unable to avoid
acknowledging
the disappearance of cartilage.
Some missed
it on the dance floor while doing the Twist, others noticed
its absence
when they crossed their legs or
hurried
across the room to welcome an old friend.
Still others
knew to wear their knee and ankle braces
while
touring the high school buildings.
None of them
could recall when so much cartilage had slipped away,
leaving bone
touching bone. A too intimate, unwanted
liaison of body parts--
and not the affection
of rekindled love affairs
some classmates
had envisioned.
